Features

The Body in Motion

Muybridge breaks the nude male body into action: run, turn, wrestle, balance, repeat. The photographs replace the single heroic pose with sequence and measurement.

Eakins Uncovered

Eakins used photography in art teaching and in his own investigations of naturalistic pose. His male nudes often feel unusually close to ordinary physical presence rather than distant classical idealization.

Out in the Open

Landscape, self-portraiture, beach, hay, water, and city replace the nineteenth-century studio. The male nude becomes personal, contemporary, and deliberately self-fashioned.

Stage 3 Portfolio

New to MNI: 1927–1998

Stage 3 adds nineteen publication-ready photographs from the 1920s through the 1990s. The strongest additions widen MNI beyond the studio: a private-feeling Hollywood sitting, soldiers bathing, physique photography, dancers, counterculture performance, East German sauna life, streaking, Berlin public nudity, and New Orleans street spectacle.
